How to Succeed in Poker and in Business
Poker is one of the most popular card games in the world. It is easy to learn, social and provides the opportunity for profit. It also requires a commitment to learning and improvement. Many of the skills that are necessary to succeed in poker are important to success in business as well. These skills include identifying where you have an advantage, understanding the odds of winning, avoiding the “sunk cost trap” and committing to continuous learning.
A round of poker begins when a player places an amount of money into the pot before cards are dealt. This is known as a forced bet. Depending on the rules of the game, players are then dealt two cards and aim to make the best five card hand using these cards and the community cards. The dealer then deals a third card face up on the table that anyone can use (the flop). Then a fifth and final card is dealt (the river) and the betting phase of the hand comes to an end.
Since you cannot see your opponents’ cards you have to decide based on incomplete information. This is called deciding under uncertainty and it is an essential skill in poker and in business as well. As you play more poker and observe experienced players you will develop good instincts about how to react to incomplete information. Moreover, you will become fluent in probability theory as you will naturally consider things like frequency and EV estimation in your decision making process.
