Learn the Basics of Poker

Poker is a card game where players bet on the strength of their hand. The person with the highest ranked hand wins the pot. While poker is mostly a game of chance, there are some skill elements that can make a huge difference to your chances of winning.

The first thing to learn is the betting rules. Players must ante something to get dealt cards, then each player can choose to call, raise or fold. In the case of raising, the new amount must be equal to or greater than the previous raise. Betting is done in a clockwise fashion. Once everyone has had a turn to bet, the dealer places a fourth card on the table called the flop. Then there is another round of betting. Then at the end of the betting, each player shows their cards and the highest ranked hand wins.

When you hold a strong starting hand, bet aggressively to push weaker hands out of the pot and improve your own chances of a good result. If you are not a good bluffer, consider folding rather than putting all your chips into a pot that is unlikely to win.
