The Basics of Poker

Poker is a card game that can be played by 2 or more people. It is a very addictive game that you can play for money or just for fun.

To start off with, you should understand the rules of the game. The first thing you should know is that the game has a pot limit. This means that a player cannot raise their stake higher than the total amount raised by all of the players before him/her (otherwise, they would have to fold).

After everyone gets 2 cards, there is a round of betting initiated by 2 mandatory bets called blinds placed into the pot by the two players to the left of the dealer. Once this is done, the player to the left of the big blind has their turn and they can either call the current bet (put out chips equal to the big blind), raise the bet by at least double or more (raise) or push their cards to the dealer face down without putting any chips into the pot (fold).

Once the betting round is over, the dealer deals 3 more cards on the table that anyone can use (the flop). There will then be another betting round. Once this is over the dealer puts one final card on the table that anyone can use (the river). The player with the highest ranked hand wins the pot.
