What is a Slot?
A narrow notch, groove, or opening, as a keyway in a piece of machinery or a slit for coins in a vending machine. Also figuratively: a position in a group, sequence, or series; an assignment or job opening. The car slid into its parking slot.
In aviation, a slot is an authorization to take off or land at a specific airport on a given day during a given time period. A slot is distinct from air traffic control clearance or other similar authorizations.
In a slot machine, a player inserts cash or, in “ticket-in, ticket-out” machines, a paper ticket with a barcode, then presses a lever or button to activate the reels. The reels then spin and stop to rearrange the symbols, and if a winning combination is formed, the player receives credits based on the paytable. Most slot games have a theme, and the symbols vary according to that theme.
In addition to the paytable, slots may have additional rules that affect how much a player can win. For example, some slot games allow players to choose which paylines they want to bet on while others have a fixed number of active paylines.
