What is a Slot?
A narrow notch, groove, slit, or opening.

A narrow passage in a piece of machinery or container, especially one for accepting coins in a vending machine. The slots in the wings of an airplane, for example, serve as control surfaces.
In video games, a slot is an area on the screen in which a player can place bets. Slots are typically shaped like a rectangle or square and may contain different types of symbols or bonus features. Some slots also offer a progressive jackpot, which can be won by placing the correct symbol combination on the pay table.
An electronic machine that accepts cash or, in the case of “ticket-in, ticket-out” machines, a barcoded paper ticket. The machine then issues credits based on the information it receives from the ticket. The machine also displays a list of available symbols. The symbols vary with each machine, but classic symbols include fruits, bells, and stylized lucky sevens.
In air traffic coordination, a slot is an authorization to take off or land at a specific airport during a specified time period. This method of airport coordination helps to reduce congestion and prevent aircraft from repeatedly waiting at the same gates for clearance. It is similar to air traffic control clearance, but distinct from it.
